Some artists leave behind beautiful paintings. Others leave behind a legacy that continues to inspire long after they’re gone. The Dzigurski family has done both.

The Dzigurski Gallery is celebrating the enduring artistic legacy of Alexander Dzigurski I (1911–1995) while introducing new opportunities for collectors and admirers to experience works from the family’s remarkable collection. Alongside this announcement, readers can also explore books that chronicle the extraordinary lives and artistic journeys of both Alexander Dzigurski I and his son, Alexander Dzigurski II, offering a deeper understanding of the people behind the paintings.

Alexander Dzigurski I’s life was shaped by resilience as much as talent. Born in what was then the Austro-Hungarian Empire, he discovered his artistic calling at an early age despite growing up on a farm.
Supported by his mother and the Serbian Orthodox Church, he pursued formal art education before serving in the Yugoslav Navy, where the sea first became a lasting inspiration for his paintings. His promising career was interrupted by World War II, forcing him to flee his homeland after escaping Nazi captivity and leaving behind a thriving portrait studio.
After immigrating to the United States in 1949, Dzigurski devoted himself to painting icons and murals for Serbian Orthodox churches before turning his attention to the dramatic landscapes and coastlines of the American West. California’s rugged shores, the Grand Tetons, Glacier National Park, the Rockies, and New England became recurring subjects in paintings celebrated for their realism, atmosphere, and emotional depth. His work eventually earned a place in prominent corporate and museum collections, cementing his reputation as one of America’s respected landscape and seascape painters.
The family’s story extends beyond Alexander Dzigurski I’s accomplishments. Following personal tragedy later in life, renewed hope arrived through his marriage to his nurse and the birth of his son, Alexander Dzigurski II.
Today, Alexander II continues to preserve and share his father’s artistic vision while carrying forward the family’s passion for fine art.
The Dzigurski Gallery now offers collectors access to works from the family collection, including paintings that have rarely, if ever, been available to the public.
Complementing this announcement are books dedicated to Alexander Dzigurski I and II, providing readers with a richer appreciation of their artistic heritage, personal histories, and the enduring legacy that spans generations. Together, the gallery and these publications invite audiences to discover not only exceptional paintings but also the remarkable human story behind them: a story of perseverance, faith, family, and a lifelong devotion to art.
